A Walk through Life

The dog central @ Bonifacio High Street. Met many people today! Mishka now has one puppy friend but she ended up slapping/scratching him in the face. 😓

The Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan Rescued His Empire

The Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan Rescued His Empire by Jack Weatherford
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

DISCLAIMER: I wrote a very long review regarding this book a few minutes ago, but it got deleted cause of my sucky internet connection. I shall try to write it again as completely as possible. Please bear with me. -_-

Rating: 4.7

This is possibly one of the most amazing non-fiction books I’ve ever read! I’ve read many, but nothing tops this one. Jack Weatherford writes beautifully and in the most interesting way possible. Reading this didn’t make me think that it’s a boring history book - it seemed more like an enthralling tale of war, romance and culture.

I’ve always loved Asian history and have always been interested in Genghis Khan’s story - how he became the most feared barbarian who defeated and acquired so many territories than he could handle.

Genghis Khan was always thought to be a barbarian, yet in this book, you could definitely see the other side of him as a strict and loving husband and father. Through his many efforts, charisma, strategies and his faith towards the Father Sky and the Mother Earth, he was looked up to by many of his fellow Mongolians and was able to unite the many steppe tribes.

Through the years after his death, his hard work of uniting the land turned for nought and, apparently, was driven to oblivion. His sons, the successors of his throne, ruined the kingdom that their father fought for. His daughters and wives, however, are of another story.

The queens or the khatuns were of a different case. They lack the strength of men, but they had their wits. They were basically brilliant strategists and leaders that when their father, Genghis Khan, placed them with the task of leading the people surrounding the very important Silk Route, they were able to utilize their powers and had control of the entire area. The queens were so amazing and respected that some of the brothers hated them. As such, one of the youngest and most beloved daughters of Genghis Khan was killed by her jealous brother - that asshole.

In the many centuries (after Genghis Khan’s death) that the Mongolians were in complete disarray and were warring against themselves, many notable khatuns emerged. A couple of my favorites were Khutulun and Manduhai Khatun the Wise. Why? Well, you’ll just have to read the book. Haha!

Recommended for everyone (maybe 16 years old and above?) and especially to history junkies like myself! :)
