A Walk through Life

capriamovies:

Holy shit, go see this movie. It really rocked. I swear to God I am not just saying this because of how in love I am with Ryan Gosling. Drive is a really really good crime drama. Now, I think that no one in the world can nail a crime drama as well as Martin Scorsese. He’s the king, period. And Drive isn’t as good as one of his movies, but it’s somewhere in the same… realm. It’s a big deal for me to say that anything can even approach Marty as far as crime dramas are concerned so just take my word for it and go see it.

Ryan Gosling called this film “A John Hughes movie with head smashing in it.” It’s funny how people are never accurate when they assess their own work. As a massive John Hughes fan, I can tell you it is absolutely nothing like that. I was thinking more David Lynch. The film has a kind of dreamy, moody quality that suggests maybe Gosling’s character will wake up and realize this as all been a dream or a crazy man’s hallucination. It also uses music EXTREMELY effectively, that was one of my favorite aspects of the film and I am now obsessed with the soundtrack.

Drive really went places I did not expect it to go. I thought I had it figured out. I got used to the tone and feel of it, I was like, I get this movie… and it defied me. I LOVE WHEN THAT HAPPENS. My friend and I literally kept grabbing each other and almost screaming. I was so into it.

If I could criticize something it would probably be that I really wanted to know more about Gosling’s character’s backstory, but I think it’s good they don’t spell everything out for us. Very slowly, as the film goes on, we see him do things and see how he uses words (what he says and more importantly, doesn’t say) that definitely clue us in to who this person really is under his visage. I don’t want to say anything more, but my friend and I had a pretty deep discussion about why he is the way that he is based on the clues given.

It was one of those films where, after the first ten minutes or so, you’re so thrilled because the beginning rocked so much and you just absolutely can’t wait to see what comes next. After the first big sequence, I just wanted to scream out FUCK YEAH cause I was so excited. I mean, as a movie buff, I live for that stuff. This kept up until the film was about 3/4 of the way done. They lost me a little bit before the climax occured. I thought they focused too much on secondary characters for a minute, the scenes dragged on a little long. Other than that, I really can’t think of anything else in this movie that I would have changed. It was perfectly measured. It holds back at the right times and gives you everything at the right times. That is so rare! Think about it, really, and you’ll see what I mean.

I would recommend Drive to everyone. Go see it. Now.

GAHHH!!! When’s this awesome film coming out in the Philippines anyway? D:
